Despite boasting a talented side which contained the likes of Hernan Crespo, Ariel Ortega, Lilian Thuram, Gianluigi Buffon and Paulo Sousa amongst others, a first league title would still prove elusive for Parma. After a two month winless streak at the start of the new millennium, the side did well to battle back to finish in a UEFA Cup qualifying spot. Crespo was in inspired form during this campaign, hitting 26 goals all in competitions, prompting Lazio to break the world transfer record to acquire the services of the long-haired Argentinian.
